Permission or Spam?

cell phone with text message imageU.S. law says you may not use robo dialers or cold calls to market to cell phones. Yesterday, The Big Fat Marketing blog reported that many large companies are trying to subvert that law using text messaging (which requires permission).

They say that text messages aren’t a phone call.

This says quite a bit about the way these companies think – and how poorly they understand these new tools.

They’re being sued. They’re losing.

No permission? It’s spam.

Doesn’t matter if the message is a text message or a tweet or an email. Online or text message or face-to-face, it’s supposed to be a conversation.

Throwing offers at people and hoping something sticks, or that they won’t complain, or that it will all work out and you’ll make money doesn’t build your tribe.

Listening does.

What do you think? Have any of you gotten an unwanted advertising text message? What did you do?
