What Every Marketer Ought to Know About Speed Dating

26138_clock

Ever hear of speed-dating? Lots of single people sit in a room at tables. There are timers.

You get eight minutes to talk to someone. After eight minutes, a bell rings, and it’s on to the next person. At the end, you rate each person you met and decide if you want to “see” any of them again.

You’ve only got a short time to make a good impression.

Web sites are a bit like that. Except instead of a few minutes, you only have 8 seconds.

Eight seconds for someone to figure out who you are, what you do, and what you offer them.

Confuse them, and they’ll leave. Make it hard to navigate your site – same thing. Be unclear about who you are (I see pretty pictures, why are they there? Is this a graphic design site? A sculptor? A photographer?).

Make it friendly and approachable. Greet new visitors with a smile (not an aggressive sales pitch). Dress it nicely. Don’t shout at people with autoplay videos or yellow highlighting. Listen a lot. Offer to help.
