Eight Ways to Build Trust as You Build Your Email List

Now that you know what to do before you start your email marketing campaign, it’s time for some tips on improving the actual campaign.

  1. Get current clients interested in what you’re doing. Tell them about the cool stuff on your site that will help them make more money (first go make some cool stuff).
  2. Build an asset (and trust) first, then and only then ask for something.
  3. Involve visitors (whether current clients or potential clients) in what you’re doing and create a conversation.
  4. Set up a series of introductory emails or an email course. You can use an autoresponder (an email system set up to automatically respond to inquiries and send out messages at fixed intervals) for this. You write a series of emails, put up a link on your site, and the autoresponder software will sign up visitors who request the course, and send each installment.
  5. Help people learn something, such as questions they should ask before hiring a photographer (and some good answers).
  6. Be conversational. Make the email from a person (not the company). Sign off with a real name and (to steal a great idea from Sonia Simone at Copyblogger), add a line inviting people with more questions to click reply and send a message to your personal email box. As Sonia pointed out, this is also a good way to get a window into what your customers want.
  7. Offer an ethical bribe on your site in return for sign up. The ethical bribe is a free white paper, report, worksheets, calculators, something of value to your visitors.
  8. Use loss leaders to get names (write a report, offer a large commission to someone with a big list to promote it for you).

  9. Guest post on other blogs (include a link to your site at the end of the post).

  1. I love your thoughts here. I completely agree that trust is the most important thing in an Email campaign. I especially like the point about being conversational.
